Is Ground Pet Transport Safe? What to Look For

Ground pet transport is statistically safer than air cargo for most pets — but only when the carrier is USDA-licensed, carries valid insurance, runs climate-controlled vans, and gives you regular check-ins. Verify all four before booking.
The pet-transport industry has two very different sides. Licensed carriers following USDA rules deliver safely every day. Unlicensed operators are where horror stories come from. The difference comes down to four checks.
Check 1: USDA license
Under the Animal Welfare Act, commercial carriers transporting certain animals must hold a USDA APHIS Class T license. We verify every listing against public APHIS records.
Check 2: Documented insurance
Ask for the certificate of insurance. Real carriers have it ready. If a company dodges this question, walk away.
Check 3: Climate control and vehicle type
- Cargo area separately climate-controlled from the cab
- Secured crates, not loose kennels
- Cameras or temperature sensors in the cargo area
Check 4: Communication cadence
You should get photo or text updates at least every 6–8 hours. No updates in 24 hours is a red flag.
Red flags to walk away from
- Cash-only or wire-only payment
- No physical business address
- Driver uses a personal SUV with no separation between cab and cargo
- Refuses to share USDA cert number
